Lord & Schryver Conservancy is pleased to present Outside Insights, our new annual program exploring the powerful influence of landscape architecture past, present and future. In keeping with our mission to honor the legacy of Elizabeth Lord and Edith Schryver, we look forward to exploring topics from a number of angles. This year’s theme is “Fire In The Landscape ” We are happy to welcome three local professionals to share their significant insights and expertise about this important and timely concern.

Speakers:

Dr. Kayla Bordelon, Regional Fire Specialist with the Oregon State University Extension Fire Program, will present “Oregon’s Diverse Fire Ecology.” She will explore how fire has historically shaped Oregon’s diverse landscapes and ecosystems and how those patterns have changed since the 1850s.

Alison Green, Defensible Space Program Coordinator with the Oregon State Fire Marshal, will discuss mitigation measures homeowners can take this fall to prepare for the 2027 fire season. Her presentation will focus on the immediate surroundings of the home and best practices for vegetation management.

Brooke Edmunds, Associate Professor (Practice) in the Department of Horticulture at Oregon State University and an OSU Extension Community Horticulturist, will discuss fire-resistant plants for the home landscape. Her presentation will cover how to identify and select plants that do not readily ignite, as well as appropriate plant placement, spacing and ongoing maintenance.
